History
The Black Spanish turkey, also known simply as the Black Turkey, possesses a rich and storied history that dates back to the early colonial era in what is now the United States. These birds originated from turkeys that were initially brought to Europe by Spanish explorers during the 16th century. Later on, English settlers played a crucial role in reintroducing these turkeys back to North America. The Black Spanish turkey is easily recognizable by its striking black plumage, which features a distinctive greenish sheen that sets it apart from other breeds. Historically, these turkeys were highly prized not only for their beautiful appearance but also for their exceptional hardiness and adaptability to different environments. During the colonial period, they were a common presence on American farmsteads and valued for their resilience and versatility. However, with the development and dominance of commercial turkey breeds, the popularity of the Black Spanish turkey gradually declined. Despite this, it remains an important heritage breed today, cherished by farmers and enthusiasts alike for its deep historical roots and unique qualities that reflect the early days of American agriculture.
